Bulk Services
The uncertainty about imported gas supplies and unreliability of ageing nuclear power stations has seen a switch back to coal as the largest source of electricity generation. These supplies are now imported as few UK mines remain in production and as a result long distance rail haulage is required from ports to reach power stations originally built near to sources of coal in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.
The new demand for train paths is over infrastructure where capacity has been reduced in the past by eliminating grade separation, singling, and the closure of signal boxes resulting in long block sections.
To date a sub optimal tactical response has been made to meet demand requirements by using a range of routes that causes unnecessary additional haulage.
FCP believes a much more strategic response is needed to the market facts that have emerged and will remain in place until a new generation of nuclear generating stations is built. We have the skills to offer advice and justification for improving capacity at key pinch points and improving the payload of trains.
The need to reduce the emission of pollutants from coal fired plant has resulted in a programme to fit flue gas desulphurisation at many sites. The process requires the inward rail movement of limestone and outward distribution of gypsum. FCP has advised a major client about the pattern of rail services to meet these needs, and can conduct similar studies in relation to this market.
Other bulk markets remain important such as the metals and construction sectors, both of which are seeing higher activity as a result of world demand for steel, and increased building activity in the UK.
