Capacity Utilisation
A key question in feasibility studies for new services is whether the network has capacity for additional trains. Whilst eventually a full timetable planning exercise will be required to support an access bid, in the early stages of a proposal a high-level analysis is appropriate to indicate whether more detailed work should be undertaken.
FCP has developed a range of techniques for quickly reviewing network capacity to identify pinch-points with a view to infrastructure changes, or to indicate where more detailed study should be focused. For the East London Line Extension Project, we carried out a study to assess the likely feasibility of operating additional trains on the South London network, which led to a detailed timetable planning study, which was used to support the application for an access option.
Our contribution to Transport for London Rail Corridor Plans used methodologies to review current usage as part of a process for developing long term plans for London’s rail network.
Where more detailed analysis becomes appropriate in the later stages of project development, simulation performance modelling of the operating railway is a valuable tool, but too often is misdirected and proves difficult to relate to further steps in the decision-making process. Whilst FCP is independent of the various software suppliers, we are familiar with the range of simulation tools on the market, and can advise on selecting an appropriate software package and methodology for your needs, and designing a cost-effective study.
