In 2002 FCP first established a core team which provided unrivalled expertise throughout the range of railway engineering disciplines. Since then the team has been developed and expanded by attracting individuals who have occupied the most senior positions in the industry and who have the skills and experience covering traction and rolling stock, civil, structural and permanent way engineering, signalling and telecommunications, and electrification and plant.
This team first made its mark through its significant contribution in reviewing and re-specifying the West Coast main line upgrade project at a time when it was running way beyond what the government could justifiably afford. As a result of this work the project has delivered substantially better value for money and has been praised by the National Audit Office. These results were achieved in no small measure as a direct result of FCP's inputs and its appraisal methodology which we call “Technical Challenge”, an approach that is now being applied to solving some of the problems faced by railways in South Africa.
FCP's Engineering team believes that the rail network of the future has to deliver a range of outputs that can be summarised as: Capability, Availability, Reliability, Safety, Ride Quality, Maintenance cost. FCP have the people who can judge the balance between these goals and are able to provide wide-ranging advice to industry leaders who must draw the diverse objectives into a cohesive policy.
