Mark joined FCP in 2008 having spent well over 30 years in the rail industry.  For 15 years he held the position of Managing Director or equivalent - 9 years as MD of privately owned Train Operating Companies and 6 years with British Rail.

In the mid 1980s, Mark transformed the Transpennine and West Yorkshire passenger services and laid the foundations for what is now one of the most successful passenger franchises.  He led the creation of the Central Region of Regional Railways – at the time one of the largest vertically integrated Divisions of BR employing some 7000 people in financial, commercial, engineering and train operation activities.  The split of train and tracks led to the creation of Central Trains which Mark managed through privatisation and then ran as part of the National Express Group.

In 1999 Mark became MD of Thameslink which he ran until the end of the franchise.  Under Mark’s leadership, Thameslink saw a 60% growth in passenger numbers and whilst paying substantial premium to Government remained a highly profitably business.  The company received wide acclaim for the management of the Thameslink blockade, which split the service in two for 8 months whilst construction works took place for the new St Pancras International station.

Mark has extensive experience in leading and managing change in large complex public and private sector transport organisations.  He has been at the forefront of the development of the industry over the last 18 years.  A strategic, commercial and profit driven individual who is able to assimilate situations, provide direction and create the right team dynamics to see solutions delivered.

Mark was special adviser to Govia on their successful bids for the West Midlands and South Central franchises.
