Richard joined FCP in 2001 following a distinguished career in which he became a member of the first successful management buy-out of a Train Operating Company and subsequently, in 1998, a Main Board Director of First Group. Following a number of early BR appointments in Freightliner, in industrial relations and British Rail Engineering, Richard embarked on a career in Inter-City becoming its Business Planning Director in 1990. The plans initiated at that time led to Inter-City becoming the first part of the railways to be profitable, an achievement which, had it not occurred, would probably have prevented the privatisation of the railways in 1994.
As Deputy and then Managing Director of Great Western, Richard was also a Board member of the Association of Train Operating Companies for four years, chairing the Class Representatives Committee, a body governing industry access rules, between 1998 and 2000.
Since joining FCP Richard has built on his extensive experience in railways and played a key role in developing the practice's commercial capabilities. Working with Eurostar UK he has helped develop commercial contracts and structures involving the various railway owners of the channel tunnel operation. He has also project managed the service introduction of Eurostar services on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link to St Pancras.
Richard lends heavyweight support to another of FCP's strengths, its strategic counsel capability. Working with John Nelson, Richard provided advice to the former Strategic Rail Authority concerning future industry relationships following the demise of Railtrack and the creation of Network Rail. He advised government authorities in connection with the termination of the Connex South Eastern franchise.
