Train Crew Deployment and Productivity
The most important asset that a train company has is its staff amongst who train crews are vital for delivering both customer satisfaction and operating performance. They also represent the company's largest directly controllable cost. How they are deployed influences profits directly.
FCP has extensive experience in this field. Several of its directors have managed train crews and been instrumental in bringing about some of the most significant changes in the terms and conditions of employment. Mike Tham led the re-negotiation of drivers terms and conditions for British Rail in the 1990's and as Production Director for GNER introduced innovations that enabled the high speed passenger operator to substantially improve its productivity and performance.
FCP has worked for several companies in reviewing train crew productivity and has also undertaken feasibility studies of the optimum train crew requirements for new train service projects, including the East London Line extension where the work was led by John Self OBE, our Director Metro Operations and supported by William Barter, head of our operations practice. FCP has also advised government authorities on the best ways of re-allocating train crews when the shape of franchises has been changed.
